House of Nature

The House of Nature, located in Mundur, Thrissur, Kerala, is a testament to how thoughtful architectural design can merge privacy, nature, and contemporary aesthetics to create a serene retreat. This private residence, designed for a military officer, is situated on an 18-cent rectangular plot, just 100 meters from National Highway 69, offering both accessibility and the tranquility of nature. Surrounded by residential homes, the house was designed with a key focus on privacy while maintaining a deep connection to the natural world.

Biophilic design principles guide the essence of this home, fostering a calm and restorative environment. Integrating natural elements such as the sounds of waterfalls, birds, and rain, the home encourages residents to connect emotionally and physically with the outdoors. The structure responds to Kerala’s diverse climate, with functional spaces designed to alleviate stress, promote well-being, and embrace the seasonal rhythms of the region.

One of the primary challenges in designing the House of Nature was ensuring privacy from neighboring properties while still allowing for seamless interaction with the landscape. The solution was an ‘H’ shaped ground floor plan, with a unique square prism rising above to house the master bedroom. This bold design element adds height and visual prominence, creating a dramatic focal point. By elevating the master bedroom, the structure offers sweeping views of the surrounding environment, enhancing the resident’s connection to the landscape while maintaining privacy. The strategically placed corner window within the prism allows natural light to flood the bedroom, creating an inviting, open atmosphere.

The juxtaposition of materials also plays a significant role in the design. The sleek, minimalist square prism is complemented by rustic field stone, which softens the starkness of the concrete and grounds the structure in its natural surroundings. This blend of modern and organic materials serves to integrate the home within its context while enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The open ‘H’ layout creates a dynamic flow of spaces, designed to prioritize both privacy and connectivity. A vertical garden on one side of the home serves as both a visual delight and a natural sound barrier, while a cascading stone waterfall on the opposite side further shields the residence from neighboring views and noise. Organic-shaped furniture and vibrant colors inspired by the surrounding landscape—earthy tones, rich greens, and floral hues—enhance the interior, promoting a harmonious and tranquil environment.

The family living area is an open-plan space that frames views of the lush surroundings. Expansive sliding glass doors create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, allowing for cross-ventilation and maximizing the connection to the landscape. The choice of natural materials such as limestone, exposed concrete, raw ceiling finishes, and warm wood flooring strengthens the home’s bond with nature. Skylights illuminate the formal living and prayer areas, enhancing the serene ambiance.

A signature feature of the home is the suspended staircase that links the two levels. Its minimalist design, supported by metal rods, echoes the home’s contemporary aesthetic. The mezzanine level houses a home theater, designed with parametric details and concealed entrances, offering a unique entertainment experience. The exterior showcases a combination of exposed concrete, stone, and metal louvers, creating a cohesive design that is both functional and visually striking. An olive tree stands proudly in front of the house, symbolizing the peaceful, grounded nature of the residence.

The House of Nature is a reflection of the owners’ desire for privacy, tranquility, and a connection to the natural world. It exemplifies how architecture can offer more than just shelter; it can create a sanctuary that nurtures the body and soul. Through its biophilic design, organic expression, and thoughtful spatial planning, this home stands as a harmonious blend of modernity and nature.
